Gardner earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Columbia University in 1970. It was there that he had his first experience of broadcasting journalism. He also attended Brown University for his Master’s degree.

James Goldman’s Career

In 1968, he reported on the “Historic Student Riots” in Columbia for the WKCR-FM university radio station. Gardner became a desk assistant, journalist, and producer for 1010 WINS in New York City in 1970.

Gardner became a reporter for WFAS radio in White Plains, New York, in 1972, and soon became a news director. Two years later, he began his career in television broadcasting at WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York.

He has worked for WPVI in Philadelphia since 1 June 1976. He is actually starring at 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on weekday newscasts, which he has been doing since 11 May 1977. Since 1980, he has covered every Democratic and Republican national convention, interviewing every president and major presidential candidate since 1976.

The Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia declared Gardner their person of the year in 1996 and took him to their Hall of Fame in 2003. Surprisingly enough, Gardner declined his induction, famously saying, “I do it for the love of the game.
