Travers Mackel Biography
Travers Mackel is a well-known American journalist who currently anchors the 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. newscasts on WDSU Monday through Friday. He also hosts WDSU’s ‘Hot Seat’ segment on Sunday nights at 10:30 p.m. Mackel has been a mainstay at WDSU since 2003, and he has been a part of every major news story in the area for over ten years. Travers expresses his admiration for what he does.
Mackel spent over three years reporting for WLBT-TV in Jackson, Miss., before joining WDSU. He served as an anchor and reporter for KTVE-TV in Monroe, La., and as an anchor and reporter for KTVE-TV in Monroe, La.
Travers earned his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University in New Orleans. He was a member of the Loyola baseball team as a shortstop in college. One of Mackel’s investigative reports was identified as a contributing factor in WDSU receiving the national Walter Cronkite Award for excellence in political journalism in 2015.

Mackel has extensive expertise in reporting on high-profile public corruption cases as well as criminal prosecutions. He served as the station’s point man for former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin’s federal corruption trial, and he was the only television reporter to get an on-camera interview with him since he was accused and convicted, and jailed.
Similarly, Travers covered former Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard’s federal corruption prosecution as well as the murder trial of the guy convicted of shooting and killing former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith. In 2009, Mackel spent a few weeks in Washington, D.C., covering former Louisiana congressman William Jefferson’s bribery trial.
In addition, his reporting has carried him all around the world. Travers was a member of the Hearst Television crew assigned to cover the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016 and PyeongChang in 2018. Mackel was part of a WDSU news team that went to upstate New York in 2015. They went to help Hearst television station WPTZ in their ongoing coverage of the Dannemora prison break.
In 2016, he traveled to Daytona Beach, Florida to cover Hurricane Matthew. In 2018, he covered Hurricane Florence in both North and South Carolina. Mackel has made multiple appearances on CNN and MSNBC, including on “The Rachel Maddow Show.” Travers featured as himself in an episode of HBO’s “Treme,” which was shot in New Orleans, and as a reporter in “This Is The End,” which was also shot in New Orleans.

In the summer of 2005, Mackel covered Hurricane Katrina, which was the most important story of his career. He was one of only a few journalists who were able to stay in the Louisiana Superdome during the storm and provide live, eyewitness reporting as parts of the roof were ripped off.
He was also on a police boat, telling viewers the story of rescue operations in New Orleans hours after the levees broke and much of the city was flooded. In the weeks following the storm, Mackel hosted much of the station’s round-the-clock coverage and was included in the documentary “Seven Days That Changed New Orleans.”
