Brian Houston Biography
Brian Houston is an Australian pastor and evangelist who is the founder and senior pastor of Hillsong Church, Sydney. Between 1997 and 2009, Houston served as the National President of the Australian Christian Churches, the Australian branch of the Assemblies of God.
At the age of three, Huston’s parents joined the Assemblies of God in New Zealand and started pastoring a church in Lower Hutt, near Wellington. Brian, his brother, and three sisters spent their childhood there. After completing school, Brian attended a Bible college for three years.

Houston was born and raised in New Zealand by his parents Frank Houston and Hazel Hoston, both Salvation Army officers. When he was three years old, the family left the Salvation Army and became members of the Assemblies.

Houston worked as the associate pastor to his father, Frank, at the Sydney Christian Life Centre in Darlinghurst after relocating to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, in 1978. He began a church on the Central Coast in 1980, and in 1981, he worked at a church in Liverpool.
Houston rented the Baulkham Hills Public School hall in Sydney’s northwestern suburbs in 1983 to launch the Hills Christian Life Centre, a new church. The inaugural service took place on August 14, 1983.
Following Andrew Evans’ retirement in May 1997, Houston was chosen president of the Assemblies of God in Australia (now known as Australian Christian Churches). Houston was instrumental in the formation of the Australian Christian Congregations network of Pentecostal churches in February 2000. He was the first president of this association, which represented around 200,000 regular attendees in affiliate churches.
Brian is also a member of the Fellowship of Australian Pentecostal Ministers (APMF). Wayne Alcorn was elected to replace Houston during the 2009 National Conference of Australian Christian Churches.
Houston works as an executive producer for Hillsong Music Australia (HMA), Hillsong Church’s music ministry. Hillsong United (formed out of the youth ministry) and Hillsong Live, Hillsong Church’s “worship expression” that includes the complete worship team, have had chart-topping records for a number of years.
Hillsong releases a live album every year, and songs from it are sung by church congregations worldwide. “Mighty to Save” and “Shout to the Lord” are two Hillsong songs, the latter of which was featured on an American Idol special episode called “Idol Gives Back” in 2008.
In addition, Hillsong split from the Australian Christian Churches in September 2018 to become an independent denomination, portraying itself as a worldwide and charismatic church. The split was amicable, according to Hillsong and ACC.
