Pete Grigsby Biography
Pete Grigsby is an American Meteorologist who has worked for KMBC 9 News since 1990. Grigsby joins the KMBC 9 First Alert Weather team with 30 years of forecasting experience and has been forecasting Kansas City weather for the past 20 years. He worked as a meteorologist in Virginia, Indiana, and Kentucky previously.
Grisby changed his professional path after nearly ten years at KMBC to accommodate better family hours by accepting a job as an administrator for the Blue Springs School District. For Blue Springs’ high schools, he runs a television station (BSSD-TV) and a radio station (BSSD-FM). He also instructs students in meteorology and broadcasting. Pete continues to work a restricted schedule at KMBC, particularly when severe weather is forecast.
Pete was an all-state basketball player in high school, scoring over 2,000 points. He turned down offers to play collegiate basketball at Auburn (with coach Sonny Smith and Charles Barkley), BYU, and other schools in order to focus on his studies in broadcast journalism and meteorology.
Grisby holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Brigham Young University as well as a master’s degree in meteorology from Western Kentucky University. Both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association have given him their “Seal of Approval.”
Pete has two children, Nyla and Pete IV, with his wife Michelle. In addition to spending quality time with his family, he enjoys running, piano playing, and serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
