Phylicia Rashad Biography
Phylicia Rashad is an American actress who rose to fame after her work in the television series, The Cosby Show. Moreover, she is quite known for being the first African-American woman to win a Tony Award for the best actress in 2004. This was in honor of her for her performance in the play, A Raisin in the Sun.
Rashad graduated from Howard University, Washington D.C, in 1970 with a B.F.A in theatre. Soon after, she secured a job with the Negro Ensemble Company in New York City.
She made her first appearance on Broadway in 1972 and had minor roles in the hit musicals The Wiz(1975) and Dreamgirls before her transition to television.
In 1982, Phylicia landed a regular role on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live. Two years down the line, comedian Bill Cosby chose her for the role of his wife, Attorney Clair Huxtable in The Cosby Show (1984-1992).

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, she turned to the stage while continuing to work continuously on television. Her role in August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean as Aunt Ester in Los Angeles and Broadway won her enthusiastic fame.
In 2004, she featured as Lena Younger, the matriarch of a struggling African-American family in the 1950s in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun.
In 2007, Phyl made her directorial debut in the production of Gem of Ocean. The following year, she made her way to history on Broadway when Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof started with its first all-black cast.
In 2009, Rashad featured as a drug-addicted matriarch in the Broadway production of Tracy Lett’s August. Later in 2010, she performed in the romantic comedy Just Wright and the mental-illness tale Frankie & Alice.
