Orville Peck Biography
Daniel Pitout is a South African country musician based in Canada. He is also known by his professional name Orville Peck. Orville rose to fame after the release of his debut album Pony in 2019. In addition, he won the Cultural Icon Award from the Tom of Finland Foundation in 2022. Prior to that, Peck is also recognized for always wearing a fringed mask that he never took off in public.
Orville was born in Canada and raised in a family musical where his father worked as a sound engineer. As a child, he was able to perform in cartoons as voice-over work as well as in musical theatre. In his mid-20s, he moved to London to study acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and later starred in a play on the West End.
Later, he began acknowledging his country music passion after the release of his song “Dead of Night” in 2017. In January 2019, Sub Pop announced the upcoming release of the first Orville album by posting a David Lynch-inspired video for his debut single “Dead of Night,” with a second, equally surreal video for “Turn to Hate” following in February. After Pony was released it received enthusiastic reviews and was later nominated for Alternative Album of the Year at the Juno Awards as well as long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize. Not only did the release of Pony make him famous also it opened up new doors into the entertainment mainstream in the United States as well as its country-themed counterpart, Stagecoach.
In 2020, Peck signed with Columbia Records. His first EP for the label, Show Pony, included the track “Legends Never Die,” a duet with country-pop superstar Shania Twain. That same year, he recorded a steel guitar-influenced cover of Bronski Beat’s “Smalltown Boy” as part of a Pride Month digital singles series, as well as a pair of Righteous Brothers covers with vocalist Paul Cauthen under the banner of the Unrighteous Brothers.
Recently, he was able to release his second album The Bronco, which paired his expansive voice with full-bodied production and arrangements that added accents of rockabilly, ’60s pop, psychedelia, and bluegrass to his mix. In addition, the song “All I Can Say” featured a duet vocal with Bria Salmena, a member of the Canadian indie rock band Frigs who moonlights in Peck’s road band.
Moreover, he also appeared on the song “Jackson”, a duet cover of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. It was also revealed that he is the sixth artist on Lady Gaga’s Born This Way The Tenth Anniversary, with Peck reimagining the song “Born This Way” in a country style.
