Anoushka Shankar Biography
Anoushka Shankar is a British-American music artist, composer, and sitar player. She began practicing sitar at the age of 9 with her father, Ravi Shankar, and at the age of 13, she made her first debut performance. Throughout her career, Anoushka has been awarded various accolades like nine Grammy Awards nominations, a Songlines Best Artist Award, and two Eastern Eye ACTA Awards. In addition, she was born London and raised in India and US.
she attended school at San Dieguito High School Academy and later after decided to follow her dream instead of attending college. She began training sitar at the age of 9 with the help of her father Ravi. At the age of 13 years, she made her stage debut performance, and later after she released her first studio album called Anoushka followed by Anourag in 2000. Since then she has released 9 solo albums and numerous collaborative recordings. In 2003, Shankar and her half-sister Norah Jones were nominated for Grammy awards.
That same year, she also became the youngest nominee in the World Music category for her third album, Live at Carnegie Hall. Moreover, three of her album are Indian classical. Before she released her fourth album, Shankar toured worldwide, playing an average of 50–60 concerts per year. Later on, she released her fourth album titled RISE, which earned her a Grammy nomination in the Best Contemporary World Music category. She became the first Indian to play at the Grammy Awards, playing material from RISE in 2006. That same year, she also made her debut acting role in Dance Like a Man for which she was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress.

In addition to that, Anoushka also collaborated with Indian producer and musician, Karsh Kale and released Breathing Under Water. Thereafter, she signed a contract with Deutsche Grammophon a record label that marked the beginning of a prolific recording and creative period for Shankar. In 2013, she received her Grammy Award nomination for her album released, Traveller, an exploration of the shared history between flamenco and Indian classical music. Following her successful career, she went on to release her first purely classical album of Indian Ragas called Home.
After that, it came the compilation Reflections, a 20-year retrospective album that revisits the best of Shankar’s cross-cultural back catalog with Deutsche Grammophon. Her breakout superhit also came after she released her song called Love Letters in 2020. The song featured many popular artists like co-producer Alev Lenz, twin sister vocal duo Ibeyi, singer and Shilpa Rao among others. Most recently, she played on the track “Ama La” on the Dalai Lama’s first music album, Inner World which was released in July 2020 on his 85th birthday.
Additionally, she was also featured on “Stop Crying Your Heart Out” as part of BBC Radio 2. The single peaked at No.7 on the Official UK Singles Chart. It was also number 1 on both UK Official Singles Sales Chart and the UK Singles Download Chart. Throughout her musical career, Anoushka has collaborated with famous artists like Jass legend Herbie Hancock, and Gold Panda. Also, she has appeared on record albums of other artists like Lenny Kravitz, Thievery Corporation, and Nitin Sawhney.
Anoushka is also widely recognized for her impassioned support of women’s rights and social justice. She has been involved in many organizations such as UNHCR and Help Refugees to raise funds and awareness for the refugee crisis. In 2020 Shankar become the inaugural President of the F-List: a UK database created to help bridge the gender gap in music. On top of this, Shankar and her father are also a supporter of animal rights.
