Ali Velshi is a Canadian television journalist, a senior economic and business correspondent for NBC News, and co-anchor of Velshi & Ruhle on MSNBC alongside Stephanie Ruhle. Velshi is based in New York and has worked for MSNBC since October 2016. He is also known for working on CNN where he was CNN’s Chief Business Correspondent, anchor of CNN’s Your Money, and co-host of CNN’s World Business Today.

Velshi is the son of Murad Velshi and Mila Velshi. His father Murad is the first Canadian of Indian origin elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. In addition, her mother Mila grew up in South Africa. His parents operated a bakery in South Africa but later relocated to Kenya during the apartheid regime of 1960. Currently, they operate a chain of travel agencies in Toronto.

In 1996, Velshi was awarded a fellowship to the United States Congress from the American Political Science Association. In this capacity, he worked with LEE H. Hamilton, the then-Democratic Representative from Indiana.
He then began his professional reporting career in Toronto as a General Assignment reporter for CFTO. Later on, he transitioned to work as a business reporter and anchor for Cablepulse 24 and its then-sister station City Television. In 1999, Ali joined Report on Business Television (now BNN Bloomberg- Business News Network) Canada’s first all-business news specialty channel. Moreover, he hosted The Business News, Canada’s first prime-time business news hour.

In September 2001, Ali relocated to the United States of America to join the business news channel CNN in New York City. He anchored several shows such as Insights, Business Unusual, Your Money, and Street Sweep. In addition, Ali co-hosted The Money Gang alongside Pat Kiernan before the network closed down in December 2004.
He was then reassigned to the main CNN network, remaining a business anchor and reporter, initially working in CNN’s early morning Daybreak. In 2005, Velshi hosted 13-hour episodes of The Turnaround, a reality television show where he traveled across America introducing small business owners who were facing challenges or seeking to grow their business to high-profile mentors who helped the small business owners develop a plan of success.
Starting in 2005, Velshi was assigned to the newly launched program, The Situation Room, a show he served until 2006. After that, he joined American Morning as a business correspondent in late 2016 and again as a co-anchor in 2011.
In addition, he spent 10 days riding the CNN election Express through rural Texas before that state’s March 4, 2008, primaries. During the financial crisis of 2007-2008, Ali was featured on television frequently throughout the day on shows.

On April 4, 2013, it was announced that Ali would leave CNN to join Al Jazeera America to host a weekly 30-minute magazine-style prime-time program titled; Real Money with Ali Velshi. In May 2015, the show relaunched as Ali Velshi on Target, later ending in April 2016 when AlJazeera America was shut down.

Ali joined MSNBC in October 2016, additionally serving its parent station NBC News as a business correspondent. He was appointed as a fill-in host of The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell on Friday edition. In December 2019, he was moved to his self-titled weekend morning show.
