Brian Kenny Biography

Brian Kenny is an American journalist who works for MLB Network as a studio host and Fox Sports and DAZN as a boxing play-by-play commentator. He is the host of MLB Now, dubbed “the show for the thinking fan” because he is the face of sabermetrics and baseball analytics on television.

Kenny previously worked for ESPN and hosted his own show, The Brian Kenny Show, on ESPN Radio. In addition, Brian is the host of the Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies at Cooperstown, New York. He is one of the country’s most regarded baseball historians and broadcasters.

Kenny acquired his magna cum laude in 1985 from the New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, New York. From 1981 to 1982, he attended St. John’s University. Kenny started his broadcasting career as a reporter for “LI News Tonight,” New York Tech’s long-running daily news program, while still in college. He began working as a reporter for WLIG, TV 55 Long Island, in May 1985. In September of 1985, Kenny was designated Sports Director of the station, marking the start of his sportscasting career. Additionally, Brian was hired as Sports Director at WTZA-TV (later WRNN-TV) in Kingston, NY in August 1986.

Brian presented “Sports Line Live,” a late-night chat show, and called play-by-play for the Marist Red Foxes men’s basketball team and the Hudson Valley Renegades minor-league baseball team. He stayed with the station until 1997, receiving 11 New York State Broadcasters Awards and 6 Associated Press Awards for his local sports coverage.

Kenny joined ESPN in 1997 and hosted the 6:00 pm SportsCenter as well as hosted ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights. He was noted for his fiery debates with some of the top boxers in the world on Friday Night Fights, particularly Floyd Mayweather. He also presented ESPNEWS’ Baseball Tonight and The Hot List, as well as ESPN Classic’s “Classic Ringside” and The Top 5 Reasons You, Can’t Blame. On the August 31, 2011, episode of The Brian Kenny Show, Kenny announced that he was leaving ESPN to join MLB Network as an anchor. Similarly, on September 2, 2011, he hosted the 6 p.m. episode of SportsCenter with Jonathan Coachman, which was his final broadcast. On September 19, 2011, Kenny made his MLB Tonight debut.

Brian has been the anchor of MLB Now on MLB Network since 2013. He may also be seen on MLB Network’s flagship show “MLB Tonight,” as well as the offseason countdown series “Top 10 Right Now!” and on-site coverage of the All-Star Game and World Series.
