Bryant Gumbel Biography
Bryant Gumbel is an American journalist, sportscaster, and television personality. He is best known for working at NBC’s “Today” as a co-host for 15 years. Gumbel has hosted HBO’s critically acclaimed investigative series Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel since 1995, which the Los Angeles Times has dubbed “flat-out TV’s best sports program.” In 2012, it received the Peabody Award.
Bryant went to school and graduated from De La Salle Institute in Chicago. He also attended Bates College and graduated with a degree in Russian history in 1970. In addition, he also earned honorary doctorates from Bates, Xavier, Holy Cross, Providence College, and Clark Atlanta University.
Gumbel began his career in 1972, working at KNBC-TV as a sportscaster. In 1975, he was employed by NBC Sports as co-host. He co-hosted its National Football League pre-show GrandStand with Jack Buck. Moreover, he worked for the show for around seven years and left to work in ”The Today Show”. While working at NBC, Bryant hosted many sports events. They included College Basketball, Major League Basketball, and the National Football League.
He returned to NBC to work as a host for the coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics from Seoul and then PGA Tour in 1990. Bryant then joined Today and worked for around fifteen years. Furthermore, he went to work at CBS as a host of a news magazine called Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel from 1997 to 1998.
Afterward, he joined CBS’ ”The Early Show” and worked as a co-host. On May 17, 2002, Gumbel left the show. Bryant has appeared on the NBC sitcom Seinfeld and interviewed Jerry Seinfeld on Today. Moreover, Gumbel talked about his illness with Regis Philbin on Live with Regis and Kelly. He said that there were a few tumors around his lungs. In October 2009, he had surgery on the tumor near his lungs.
