Charles Hurt Biography
Charles Hurt is an American journalist and political commentator who is currently the opinion editor of The Washington Times, Fox News Contributor, Breitbart News contributor, and a Drudge Report editor. Hurt’s opinions have been considered to be and large Republican-leaning.
Charles started his newspaper career in Chatham, Virginia. At this time, he was eight years old and the managing editor of a local single-sheet publication he ran with his brother and sister called The Gilmer News and Gossip. Despite his father’s warning that the field of writing is not paying, Hurt has nothing else he ever wanted to do.
The first job Charlie actually got paid for was at the Danville Register & Bee in the summer of 1993. He covered everything from summer storms t fall tobacco auctions. This job gave him a chance to learn some f the most profound lessons and basic rules of newspapering from Bonnie Cooper, who was the very fine editor of the paperback then, and Bernard Baker and Robert Benson, who are still there today.
Driven by the zeal to learn, Charlie worked the next summer on the State Desk at the Richmond Times-Dispatch. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College with degrees in English and Political Science in 1995, Hurt headed west and got a temporary internship with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

His dream to work for a big city newspaper covering crime, politics, and mayhem, Charlie moved north to the Motor City and crossed the picket line. While there, he worked for The Detroit News from 1995 to 2001 covering, gang murders, the mob, corruption in the city’s public schools, and politics that make the shenanigans of Congress seem tame.
Charlie worked at the paper until 2001 when he moved to the Washington, D.C. area to join the staff of The Charlotte Observer. In addition, Hurt was The New York Post’s D.C. Bureau Chief and news columnist covering the White House for five years.
Between 2003 to 2007, Hurt covered the U.S. Congress as a reporter for The Washington Times before leaving to join The New York Post. In 2011, Charlie joined The Washington Times as a political columnist, and he was named the opinion editor in December 2016.
