Claus Meyer Biography
Claus Meyer is a Danish culinary entrepreneur, food activist, cookbook author, professor, and TV host. He is the founder of the New Nordic Cuisine philosophy. Meyer is also a popular mediator of food culture in both Denmark and internationally for many years. Before this, he is an associate professor in the Department of Food Science at the University of Copenhagen.
Meyer was born and raised in Nyobing Falster, Denmark. He attended the School of Art in Karlsruhe in 1980 and later got a professorship at the Academy in Düsseldorf, where he quickly gained popularity. He also obtained a Master’s degree in International Business Studies from the Copenhagen Business School. Claus is a restaurateur and culinary entrepreneur. As a chef, he has been associated with many projects including the plethora, and has also become a popular mediator of food culture in both Denmark and internationally for many years.
He worked together with chef René Redzepi and co-founded a restaurant called Noma. The aim of opening the restaurant was to realize the theoretical ideas of the New Nordic Cuisine Movement as well as to foster the place. On top of that, the restaurant was awarded three Michelin stars and was voted the best restaurant in the world in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2021. Moreover, Claus has also hosted various TV cooking shows such as Meyers Køkken, and New Scandinavian Cooking as well as broadcast in more than 130 countries.

In 2010, he established the Melting Pot Foundation which runs various projects across the globe. The organization has helped people in Danish by encouraging those in prison to live a life without crime as well as helping them with their diet. In 2013, Melting Pot set up a cooking school in La Paz, Bolivia, providing culinary education to impoverished Bolivians. They also founded a restaurant titled Gourmet which was voted 17th best in Latin America on Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
Currently, the organization is working on a social project in Brownsville and East New York. It is also establishing a culinary school, cafeteria, bakery, and community center, serving the local community to engage at-risk youth. Aside from that, Meyer also opened Great Northern Food Hall and Agern restaurant, both in the Vanderbilt Hall of Grand Central Terminal and New York. However, Agern restaurant permanently closed in 2021 following a long period of closure during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition, Meyer has also written and published numerous cookbooks. He is an associate professor in the Department of Food Science at the University of Copenhagen. Moreover, Claus was appointed “Social Impact Fellow” at the Haas School of Business, University of California in Berkeley.
