Dale Hansen Biography
Dale Hansen is an American sportscaster who formerly worked as the weeknight sports anchor during the 10 p.m. newscasts on ABC’s Dallas affiliate WFAA. In addition, Dale hosted Dale Hansen’s Sports Special on Sundays at 1010:35 pm, consistently one of the highest-rated local programs in Dallas-Fort Worth. His segment gained over 300,000 people.
Hansen served in Newton, Iowa as a radio disc jockey and operations manager at KCOB, covering the Newton Cardinals and the Newton Nite Hawks. He later relocated to Knoxville, Iowa, and joined KNIA radio as News Director. Soon after, he moved to Saint Cloud, Minnesota to work at KCLD radio. This gave him a chance to work closer to his hometown of Logan, Iowa, eventually joining the radio station he grew up listening to, KOIL in Omaha, Nebraska.
Dale landed his first job in Dallas at KDFW, which at the time was CBS’s Dallas affiliate. He then left the station and joined WFAA in 1983. At that time, Hansen was at 10 pm, and legendary anchor Verne Lundquist was at 6 pm, so WFAA had claimed them to be “Texas’ Best Sportscasters.”
In 1987, Dale was honored with the George Foster Peabody Award for Distinguished Journalism. That same year, he won the DuPont-Columbia Award for his contribution to the investigation of SMU’s football program. Subsequently, the NCAA prohibited SMU from fielding a football program in 1987.
Hansen is the only local on-air broadcaster who has received the Radio Television Digital News Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award, which he received in 2019. He has also been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and on the Ellen Degeneres Show.
