Daniel Gillies Biography
Daniel John Gillies is a New Zealand and Canadian actor, film producer, director, and screenwriter. He is popular for starring as Elijah Mikaelson on The CW television series The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off The Originals. As a writer and director, he is known for starring alongside his wife in his own film, Broken Kingdom.
Daniel was born in Winnipeg, Canada but raised in Invercargill and then in Hamilton where he attended Hamilton Boys High School. Later after, he enrolled at Unitec, Auckland in ‘Performing and Screen Arts’. While there, Daniel appeared in several stage performances such as The Godboy, in which he won a Chapman-Tripp Theatre award for Best Actor for his role as ‘Jimmy Sullivan.’
Aside from acting, he is also a writer and director who directed his own play called ‘Maybe’ at ‘Unitec Performance and Screen Arts Theatre’. Moreover, he has also been featured in a leading role in the TV series Street Legal playing the character role of Tim O’Connor. While still in his homeland, he realized that his career opportunities in New Zealand were limited and therefore decided to move to Sydney, Australia for a short time. Thereafter, he then moved to Canada for two months and worked as a waiter and dishwasher until he move to Los Angeles.

In Los Angeles, Gillies landed the role of John Jameson in the movies Spider-Man 2 and Bride and Prejudice. On top of this, he has also guest appeared on TV shows like NCIS, Masters of Horror, and True Blood. Daniel become widely recognized in 2010 when he was cast in a recurring role on The CW drama ‘The Vampire Diaries as Original Vampire as Elijah Mikaelson.
Later after, he reprised his role as Elijah in the spin-off supernatural drama, The Originals. In addition, Gillies starred in the leading role in the Canadian supernatural medical series ‘Saving Hope’, as Dr. Joel Goran. The series become a popular hit after it was released which led to it being expanded from 13 to 18 episodes.
Furthermore, Gillies has also directed and starred with his wife Rachael Leigh Cook in the film Broken Kingdom. Currently, he is writing two screenplays which we hope to see on film in the future, and is determined that one day, Tom Selleck will play the role of his father.
