David Brooks Biography
David Brooks is an American journalist and certified author who is currently working as a conservative political and cultural commentator for The New York Times. He has also worked as a film critic for The Washington Times, a reporter and late op-ed editor at The Wall Street Journal, a senior editor at The Weekly Standard, and as a commentator on NPR and the PBS NewsHour.
When Brooks was 12, his family moved to the Philadelphia Main Line, where he graduated from Radnor High School in 1979. Later in 1983, he graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in history. As an undergraduate, he contributed reviews and satirical pieces to campus publications.
After graduating, he became a police reporter for the City News Bureau of Chicago. City News Bureau of Chicago was a wire service owned jointly by the Chicago Tribute and Chicago Sun-Times. In 1984, he applied and was accepted as an intern at Buckley’s National Review. After his internship, he spent some time at the conservative Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He also wrote more reviews for The Washington Times.

Brooks was then hired by The Wall Street Journal in 1986, where he worked first as an editor of the Brook Review section. From 1990 to 1994, the newspaper posted Brooks as an op-ed columnist in Brussels. As an op-ed columnist, he covered Russia; the Middle East; South Africa; and European affairs.
In 1994, he joined the non-conservative Weekly Standard. Two years later, Brooks edited an anthology, Backward and Upward: The New Conservative Writing. As an author, he published his first book in 2000 titled Bobos in Paradise: The New Upper Class and How They Got There. In 2004, he published his second book, On Paradise Drive. The book was published as a sequel to his 2000 book, Bobos in Paradise, but the book was not as well-received as its predecessor.
