David Portnoy Biography
David Portnoy is an American IT celebrity, blogger, and founder of the sports and pop culture blog Barstool Sports. Barstool Sports is a blog network that provides content for the fraternity sports fan set, ranging from quick takes on media and culture to straight-up video aggregation.
Portnoy grew up in Swampscott, where he attended Swampscott High School in Massachusetts. Todd McShay of ESPN was one of his classmates. In 1995, Portnoy started attending Michigan University, graduating with a degree in education.
Dave was unable to pass the language requirement for undergraduates and transferred to the School of Education. With no hope of becoming a teacher, he graduated. Portnoy reported on January 7, 2016, that the Chernin Group had acquired Barstool’s majority stake and that its headquarters would relocate to New York City. In 2020, Penn National Gaming bought a 36% stake in Barstool Sports for $163 million. The Chernin Group held a 36 percent interest in the business after the sale, while Portnoy continues to manage the platform and maintains creative control over the content.
At the White House in July 2020, Portnoy interviewed President Donald Trump. Moreover, the interview caused controversy within Barstool Sports, with podcast host Dave Katz openly criticizing the interview.
