Dennis Waterman Biography
Dennis Waterman is an English singer and actor who is best known for his tough-guy leading in the TV series; The Sweeney, Minder, and New Tricks. So far, he has featured in 28 films retiring from acting between 2015 and 2019.
Waterman was born in Clapham, London. He then joined the Granard Primary School, a state primary school on the Ashburton Estate in Putney, South West London. Dennis also joined Corona Stage School, an independent school at Ravenscourt Park in Hammersmith in West London.
A year later, he featured in the BBC TV series William as William Brown. He further played the role of Oliver Twist in the production of the Lionel Bart musical Oliver! staged at the Mermaid Theatre, London.
He started his acting career in childhood with his first role in Night Train for Inverness (1960). He followed with two small stage roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1960 season. In 1961, when he was just 13, Waterman played the part of Winthrop Paroo in the Adelphi Theatre production of The Music Man.
Waterman featured in the BBC television series Colditz as a young Gestapo officer in the early ’90s. In 1971, Dennis featured alongside Richard Harris and John Huston in; Man in the Wilderness. Furthermore, he was a member of the company of actors who featured in The Sextet, a BBC 2 series that included the Dennis Potter drama; Follow the Yellow Brick Road.
Still, in the 70s, Waterman became widely known as DS George Carter in The Sweeney during the 1970s. In addition, he sang the theme song in Minder; I Could Be So Good For You. A song that rose to the top three in the UK chart in 1980 and the top ten hit in Australia.

Having a strong base in the acting career, Dennis featured in a television film; The World Cup: A Captain’s Tale (1982). This was a true story of West Auckland F.C., a part-time side who won the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy. In this film, he played the role of Bob Jones, the club captain.
Between 2003 and 2014, Dennis was a regular cast member in New Tricks. However, in 2015 Waterman expressed his intent to leave the television series during its final season. True to his words, he only featured in the first two episodes. Later on, he narrated the reality television series; Bad Lad’s Army, and also in the 2009 BBC2 ministries Moses Jones.
In 2020, Dennis featured in the Australian drama-comedy film Never Too Late which was filmed in Adelaide, South Australia 2019.
