Playing for Norwich, Dion started his professional career at the team but never made it to the first team. In 1998, he joined Cambridge United as a center-back but was remembered as a striker. His excellent goal-scoring assisted the club to successive promotions.
In 1992, Manchester United signed him for £1 million, becoming their first top scorer in the Premier League. However, in the first game of the 1992/93 season, Dion fractured his leg and was out of action for six months. In the same season, Manchester United won the Premier League but as a result of special dispensation from the league, he did not earn a title winner’s medal.
He regained his fitness in the 1993-94 season, but the fruitful relationship between Cantona and Hughes reduced his first-team chances. In the season, Dion managed five league appearances, scoring once in early April in a 3-2 home victory over Oldham Athletic. The only competitive objective that Dion scored for United at Old Trafford was the goal against Oldham.
In December 1999, Dion suffered a life-threatening broken neck while playing for Aston Villa against Sheffield Wednesday. To keep three neck vertebrae together, the fracture needed a titanium plate. Three months later Dublin was back in action and in April 2000, helped Villa reach their first FA Cup final in 43 years.

Dion spent several weeks on loan at First Division Milwall in 2002. He was then offered a free move to Premier League side Leicester City in the summer of 2004. Dublin scored just four goals in 38 competitive matches in his first season with the club. On 20 September 2006, Norwich City revealed that they had been joined by Dion before the end of the season 2006-07.
Dublin made his debut when he came on as a substitute against Plymouth Argyle on September 23, 2006. While serving as a pundit for a match between Aston Villa and Chelsea on 2 September 2007, Dion said that this would be his last season as a professional footballer.
Between 1995 and 1998, he played for Coventry City. During the 1997–98 season, Dion won four England caps. That same season, Dion equaled the Coventry record for most goals in a top-division season with 23 goals in all competitions.
