Donnie McClurkin Biography
Donnie McClurkin is a renowned American gospel singer and evangelist. He has won three Grammy Awards, two Soul Train Awards, two BET Awards, ten Stellar Awards, A Dove Award, and an NAACP Image Award. In addition, Donnie is one of the top-selling gospel artists, selling over 10 million albums worldwide. He was even named a “Reigning King of Urban Gospel” by Variety.
At the age of eight years, he lost his two-year-old brother was hit and killed by a speeding driver. Soon after the loss, McClurkin experienced family turmoil due to his brother’s loss. Soon after, he was a victim of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of his great uncle. For some years, he was abused by his great uncle’s son.
In addition, two of the sisters dealt with substance abuse problems. From that point, he started seeking solace in going to church, and also through his aunt who sang background vocals with gospel musician, Andraé Crouch. With such inspiration, he got interested in music. By the time he was a teenager, Donnie had formed the McClurkin Singers and later formed the New York Restoration Choir, with recordings from as early as 1975.

In 1989, McClurkin was hired as an associate minister at Marvin Winans’ Perfecting Church in Detroit, Michigan. He served as an assistant to Winans for over a decade. In 1991, he was diagnosed with Leukemia, later turning the doctor’s advice on immediate treatment.
In 2001, Donnie was ordained as a pastor by Marvin L. Winans. In the same year, he established Perfecting Faith Church in Freeport, New York, a church that started as a small bible study group.
His weekly radio program, The Donnie McClurkin Show debuted in 2006, where he broadcasted to over seventy-five markets. Between 2010 to 2015, McClurkin featured as a judge on five seasons of BET’s Sunday Best. His discography includes Again (2003), Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs (2004), We Are All One (Live in Detroit) (2008), Duets (2014), and The Journey (Live) (2016).
In 2009, Donnie broadcast his own television series, Perfecting Your Faith, on cable television. His television appearances include Good Morning America, The View, CBS”s The Early Show, Girlfriends, and The Parkers. Moreover, he has been featured in films such as The Gospel and The Fighting Temptations where he played a single man or a pastor.
