Doris Burke is a renowned American sports announcer and analyst for NBA on ESPN, NBA on ABC, College Basketball on ESPN, and College Basketball on ABC games. She is also the first woman to serve as a game analyst for the NBA Finals after she provided commentary on ESPN Radio in 2020. Moreover, Burke is a recipient of the prestigious Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. Previously, she served as an analyst for WNBA games on MSG, and on New York Knicks games.

Talking about her education, Doris completed her schooling at Manasquan High School, where she participated in basketball and played as a point guard. After that, she enrolled at Providence College where she graduated with a degree in health service administration and social work. She also furthered her study and earned a Master’s in education at Providence College. While still in college, Burke also continued to play basketball, where she become a member of the Providence Friar women’s basketball team as a point guard for four years.

In addition, she also received the title of the Big East Women’s Basketball Tournament all-tournament team twice. Likewise, she also become the second-team All-Big East player and was named the College’s Co-female Athlete of the Year in 1987. Shortly after college, Doris was hired and worked as an analyst for women’s games for her alma mater on the radio in 1990. She also worked at Big East Women’s games on television in the same role and before later moved to Big East men’s games. In 1991, Burke moved and joined ESPN Network where she served in various roles including the NBA, women’s and men’s college basketball.

Prior to that, she also become part of ESPN’s coverage of the WNBA. She also served as the lead sideline reporter for the NBA Finals on ABC. Moreover, Doris also became the first woman to be a commentator for a New York Knicks game on the radio and on television. Aside from that, she also becomes the first woman to be a commentator for a Big East men’s game. In 2010, she appeared as the new sideline reporter for 2K Sports’ NBA 2K11 video game as well as appeared in the latest series, NBA 2K23.

Three years later, she signed a contract to serve as an NBA commentator for ESPN. A month later after the contract, Burked made an appearance on ESPN’s NBA pre-game show NBA Countdown, alongside analysts Jalen Rose and Avery Johnson. Additionally, she also became a regular NBA game analyst for ESPN and become the first woman to work at the national level. Doris also replaced Doug Collins, who left ESPN for a job with the Chicago Bulls.

In 2018, she won the prestigious Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. Later on, she worked together with commentator Marc Kestecher and analyst Jon Barry on ESPN Radio. Most recently, she also worked alongside commentator Beth Mowins in calling an NBA game, as part of ESPN’s plan to have an all-women broadcasting and production crew. After that, they returned back following the second season during International Women’s Day 2023.
