Ed Gordon Biography
Ed Gordon is an American journalist best known for his association with BET over four different decades. From 1988, he worked as BET’s main news anchor until 1996. He also worked there from 2000 to 2001 before hosting the interview show BET Tonight from 2001 to 2002 and another interview show, Weekly with Ed Gordon, from 2010 to 2011.
Gordon studied at Cass Technical High School in Detroit. In addition, he joined Western Michigan University and graduated in 1982 with a B.A degree in communications and political science. Gordon began his career as an intern at Detroit’s public television station WTVS.
He has worked as the host of Detroit Black Journal, a weekly talk show. Additionally, Ed also worked as a freelance reporter for the BET, situated in Washington, D.C. He joined BET as an anchor of the weekly news show BET News in 1988. Gordon frequently produces his interview shows and other specials with the help of only one or two assistants.
Afterward, he joined NBC to offer interviews and commentary for their programs Dateline NBC and the Today Show. When his three-year contract with NBC ended, Ed went back to work at BET. Moreover, he continued to win accolades for his interviewing skills with the network. Later, he went to work at CBS as a correspondent with the long-running news magazine 60 Minutes, an honor granted to few outsiders.
In 2005, Ed left BET and went to work with National Public Radio. His program is called News and Notes with Ed Gordon. The show is focused on news of interest to the black community. Additionally, Gordon released a book titled Conversations in Black: On Power, Politics, and Leadership in 2020.
