Elizabeth Cook Biography
Elizabeth Cook is an American journalist currently working as a co-anchor of KPIX 5 News at 5:00 pm and 11:00 pm. She is a seven-time Emmy and two-time Edward R Murrow award-winner. In 2012, Cook received a NorCal RTNDA award. Elizabeth began her career as a reporter in Palm Springs, eventually rising to a morning anchor and then the primary evening anchor for the NBC affiliate, KMIR.
Her interest in journalism came way back in high school. She recalls her insights;
“I was Rose Princess for the Tournament of Roses and that required a lot of public speaking,” she remembers. “NBC’s Tom Brokaw was the Rose Parade Grand Marshall. We went to many of the events together and I got to know him pretty well. I loved hearing his incredible stories from his career and became inspired by his immense compassion for people”
After completing her Broadcast degree from the prestigious USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, Elizabeth interned at ESPN and also worked at The Jane Pauley Show at NBC. Immediately after her graduation, she landed her first on-air reporting job in Palm Springs.
Cook reported, produced, and served as a multi-media journalist before rising to the primary news anchor position at KMIR-TV. At the station, she covered two of the deadliest fires in California history, the death of President Gerald Ford and visits from President George W. Bush.
Elizabeth Cook KPIX 5 News
A few months after joining KPIX 5 News as the 5 pm co-anchor, Cook went on a mission in San Francisco District covering a chaotic Occupy march when a protester shoved her and her cameraman. Within a few moments, the team got to rescue and filled their report for the 11 pm newscast. Afterward, it became a routine that Elizabeth would finish her 5 pm show and then jump in a live truck to cover breaking stories across the Bay Area for the 11 pm news.
In 2013, Cook was promoted to co-anchor KPIX News 11 pm edition alongside Ken Bastida. At the station, she extensively covered the Occupy movement and the illegal sale and transport of guns in Oakland. She also reported on the Bay Area’s connections to some of the world’s biggest stories. Notably, she profiled a Bay Area man who assisted Syrian refugees to escape their country; reported on the California company developing a serum to treat the Ebola virus; and covered a new medical device that is unlocking some of the mysteries of Parkinson’s Disease.
Furthermore, Cook exposed the illegal transport of California horses to out-of-state slaughterhouses, not forgetting the controversial experiment to protect a threatened species of owl in Humboldt County. Throughout her career, Elizabeth has been passionate about some of the Bay Area’s most intriguing women, from the San Francisco Chronicle’s first female Editor-In-Chief Audrey Cooper to 49ers General Counsel Hannah Gordon.
Elizabeth is a 10-time Emmy and two-time Edward R Murrow recipient as well as a recipient of two NorCal RTNDA awards. When she is not working, Cook enjoys chasing after her son Beau, exploring San Francisco restaurants with her husband, and undertaking her endless quest to find the best coffee in the Bay Area.
