Erwin Lutzer Biography

Erwin Lutzer is an American evangelical Christian Speaker, radio broadcaster, and author who is famous as the former senior pastor of The Moody Church in Chicago, Illinois (1980-2016). On November 10, 2018, Lutzer’s television production won three regional Emmy Awards. His production was on A Call for Freedom where he traced the Protestant Reformation from the time of Martin Luther to the shot on location in Germany.

Erwin was born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada, and later became a born-again Christian when he was 14 years of age. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biblical Education from Winnipeg Bible Institute (now Providence University College and Theological Seminary) in 1962.

From 1971 to 1977, he was the lead pastor of Edgewater Baptist Church in Chicago. He earned his M.A. in Philosophy from Loyola University Chicago at that time. In 1967, Erwin received his Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary. He then enrolled in Loyola’s Ph.D. program to earn a doctorate in philosophy.

He did not, however, finish his dissertation. Lutzer got two honorary doctorates in the following years: an LL.D. from Simon Greenleaf School of Law and a Doctor of Divinity at Western Conservative Baptist Seminary.

Lutzer became the senior pastor of The Moody Church in Chicago’s Lincoln Park area in January 1980. Under his leadership, the church and its ministries expanded rapidly, prompting the construction of a new Christian Life Center to replace the original 75-year-old structure.

Lutzer announced his retirement from his senior pastor position at The Moody Church on January 4, 2016, during a Sunday sermon. He stated that he would remain as senior pastor until a new one was chosen, after which he would consider himself “Pastor Emeritus” at the church.  Erwin would then “play a wider role” by continuing his radio show “Running to Win” and “speaking at media rallies, doing seminars, and authoring books.”

Lutzer preached his farewell sermon as senior pastor of The Moody Church on May 22, 2016, and officially stepped down from the position.

Lutzer has three radio shows: “Songs in the Night,” “Running to Win,” and “The Moody Church Hour.” These programs are aired on radio stations across the United States, including Moody Radio and the Bible Broadcasting Network, and are streamed live on the internet across the world.

Lutzer speaks in churches, conferences, and retreats all around the world, including the Word of Life Conference Center in Hudson, Florida.

His television production A Call for Freedom, which traces the Protestant Reformation from Martin Luther’s time and was produced on location in Germany, won three regional Emmy Awards on November 10, 2018.
