Jake Tapper Biography
Jake Tapper is a renowned writer, author, and cartoonist from the United States. He is the Lead Washington Anchor for CNN, and hosts the weekday TV news show The Lead with Jake Tapper, and co-hosts the State of the Union public affairs program on Sunday morning public affairs program State of the Union.
Tapper’s 27-year career has seen him cover significant events in the United States, including President Obama’s inauguration in January 2009. He received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Live Coverage of a Current Headline Story. Tapper moderated the Republican primary debate in September 2015, drawing more than 23 million viewers. This made it the most-watched program in CNN’s history and the second-most-watched primary debate ever.
Tapper attended the Akiba Hebrew Academy, an independent Jewish day school formerly based in Merion, Pennsylvania. He then went to Dartmouth College, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History degree from Phi Beta Kappa to magna cum laude in 1991. While in Dartmouth, Tapper was a member of the brotherhood of Alpha Chi Alpha. He attended, though briefly, the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
Tapper began his career in 1992 as the press secretary for Democratic Congressional nominee Marjorie Margolies-Campaign Mezvinsky, who was later involved in a criminal campaign scandal, and then worked as her press secretary.
Jake Tapper also worked with Powell Tate, owned by Democrat Jody Powell and Republican Sheila Tate, a D.C-based public relations agency. Tapper was a Senior Writer for the Washington City Paper news outlet, beginning in 1998. His report on going on a date with Monica Lewinsky, which started a series of activities, ultimately earned him an award from the Society of Professional Journalists.
