Jeff Van Gundy Biography
Jeffrey William Van Gundy is a well-known American commentator who is working alongside Mike Breen and Mar Jackson at ESPN. He is also the current coach of the National Team of the USA. Formerly, he worked as the head coach of the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Prior, Van Gundy was born and raised in Hemet, California, United States.
He completed his high school education at Brockport High School. There he was a highly competitive player in school and remained a point guard. Despite his below-average height, he emerged as a strong player. Besides that, Jeff was named twice to the All-Greater Rochester Selection in 1979 and 1980. Afterward, he enrolled himself at Nazareth College, where he earned All-American honors while playing for his college team named the Golden Flyers.
In addition to that, he also played the leading role for his team in the NCAA Division III Tournament berth. Shortly after that, he furthered his study at Yale University, where he studied with the famous American actress Jodie Foster. Also, he attended Menlo College and finally graduated in 1985 from Nazareth College. Soon after college, Van Gundy was hired as a head coach for New York’s McQuaid Jesuit High School.
There, he worked for a year before he moved and worked as an assistant under head coach Rick Pitino, at Providence College. During his second season with the Friars, he was promoted to assistant coach under Gordon Chiesa. In 1989, Jeff was employed as an assistant coach for the New York Knicks. While there, he worked for six and half years under the leadership of several coaches such as Don Nelson, Stu Jackson, John MacLeod, and Pat Riley.

His team also won three Atlantic Division titles, and even qualified for the playoffs every year. Van Gundy was also named head coach of the New York Knicks, taking over the reins from Don Nelson. As the head coach of New York Knick, he made headlines when he led his team to acquire a 32-point blowout win over Michael Jordan. Furthermore, the Knicks made history in the franchise when they held the third position with 57-25 points. Jeff also created a memorable scene in the 1998 NBA Playoffs series between the New York Knicks and the Miami Heat.
Following that, the team continued to perform great until when they received the shocker news that Jeff was resigned from the team. In 2003, he joined the Houston Rockets as their head coach. While there, Jeff also led his team to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in five years. At the end of the season, the team had reached 45-37 points although they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
Despite that, he helps his team secure their position in the second round. Thereafter, he led the team to win in more than 50 games before later he left and joined ESPN as a commentator and analyst. On top of that, Jeff also became the head coach of the senior USA basketball team in 2017. That same year, he led his team to a gold medal at FIBA AmeriCup. Currently, he is a regular member of play-by-play alongside Mike Breen and Mar Jackson. Aside from that, he was an executive board member of Pro-Vision Academy.
