LaMonica Peters Biography

LaMonica Peters is a renowned American journalist who currently serves as a general assignment reporter at KTVU in Oakland, California. She joined the station in May 2022. She is excited to be working in the Bay area.

Peters likes the laid-back, tech-influenced atmosphere of the South Bay and anticipates telling stories that will influence the community. Her fascination with broadcasting began in Los Angeles with Crenshaw High Cougar News. She would address classmates through a closed-circuit TV every week as Student Body President.

Peters would as well go to the top urban L.A. radio station to report the most popular songs voted on by students. This was her first experience of being in broadcasting and she loved it.

She attended UCLA, where she received her degree in Communications Studies. Afterward, Peters taught school in the Los Angeles Unified School District but finally decided to study for her dream job as a broadcast journalist. Currently, her work has been seen nationally on CBS, CNN, ABC News, and Spectrum Networks.

In addition, Peters kicked off her broadcasting career on radio. She also volunteered at two local radio stations while still working full-time. She was an intern at KJLH-FM, a station she grew up listening to, and where she gained knowledge on how the positive influence local media outlets can have on a community.

Moreover, Peters worked as the host of “The Peters Poll” at KPFK-FM, a part of the public affairs show at a public radio station based in Los Angeles. It was her first opportunity to use social media to link directly with listeners. She’d put forward a question to the audience about a hot topic on Facebook and then read some of their feedback on air.

Furthermore, after working in radio, she decided to study for a career in television news. After a short while, she headed to WXVT in Greenville, MS to work as the weekend anchor and reporter. Then she headed to WCBI News in Columbus, MS. She covered the aftermath of the 23 tornadoes that ripped through Mississippi on the same day, claiming the lives of 14 people.

She also interviewed Sabrina Butler, the only woman in America to be acquitted from death row, as she campaigned around the country to remove the death sentence.

In 2014, Peters was recognized by the Mississippi Associated Press for Public Affairs for a three-part series on breast cancer. Her aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer a year prior, and, gratefully, she’s now a survivor. Additionally, Peters started teaching communications and theater classes at Mississippi State University, the biggest college in the state, and also at Mississippi Valley State University, an HBCU.

After spending three and a half years in Mississippi, Peters moved north to Buffalo, NY to work as a reporter for Spectrum News. She went to Flint, MI to cover a church in Buffalo as they supplied bottled water directly to the community after the city’s water system had been contaminated.

Peters also covered breaking news and around-the-clock extreme weather. Furthermore, in June 2017, she received the New York State Associated Press Award for Public Service. She played a part in a series of stories about a city sidewalk state after a seven-month-old baby in a stroller was hit and killed by a car.

Peters returned to the West Coast to serve as a freelance reporter in Seattle. In 2019, Seattle had one of the largest snowstorms in a century, and she was part of an integral part of the coverage, warning viewers of the dangers and means to get help if needed.

She also reported on one of the biggest environmental student protests for ABC News Live. Additionally, she appeared as a guest panelist on Seattle Refined, a lifestyle program for KOMO News.

After working in Seattle, Peters went back to Southern California in San Diego. She began at CBS 8 at the peak of the pandemic in late 2020, working remotely. Peters was able to really link with the community and do the work she’s always wished to do: stories about people.

She continued educating the next generation of journalists at Palomar College in San Diego County, teaching a broadcast and media writing class. In her free time, Peters likes to spend time with family and friends, traveling, watching sports, and mentoring budding journalists.
