Larry Madowo Biography
Larry Madowo is a Kenyan award-winning journalist, writer, and speaker currently the CNN International correspondent based in Kenya’s capital Nairobi. Previously, he served as a North American Correspondent for the BBC and also anchored breaking news and presented BBC World News America live from Washington, D.C.
Madowo was a 2019-20 Knight-Knight-Bagehot Fellow in Economics and Business Journalism at Columbia University in New York and the BBC Africa Business Editor until 2019. Moreover, his career specialization entails business, technology, current affairs, politics, and popular culture.
Madowo grew up in various parts of Kenya including Nairobi, Kisumu, and Siaya. He attended Usingo and Karapul Primary Schools and later joined St. Gabriel Seminary School for his secondary education. At the Catholic school, Larry wanted to train as a Catholic priest but by the time he was completing high school this had changed. He graduated from Daystar University in Nairobi with a Communications degree in 2006. He also studied broadcast journalism in college.

Madowo started his broadcast career as an intern at a vernacular radio station Bahasha FM reading news in English in 2007. He then dropped out of college to take up a job at Kenya Television Network, one of Africa’s oldest private television networks. After working for 3 years, Larry had made a household name for himself. He left the station for NTV where he served as a business anchor and reporter.
In May 2012, Larry joined the South African-based CNBC Africa as one of its main anchors of the market day shows Open Exchange, Power Lunch, and Closing Bell. Moreover, his tenure lasted for only 8 months, and in December 2012, he went back to NTV, taking over as the technology editor and news anchor. At the same time, he returned to college and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Daystar University.
As he worked for NTV, Larry also freelanced for various global news outlets including CNN International, France 24 English, the BBC, and Public Radio International. He also served as a contributing columnist for the Washington Post’s Global Opinion page.
On April 11, 2018, Larry was set to join BBC News Africa as a Business Editor. He led a team of business journalists based in Nairobi, Lagos, Dakar, London, and Johannesburg. In 2019, Larry presented a radio documentary on the Chinese-built railway in Kenya. The presentation won the Daily Journalism (Single Report) category at the 2019 Association of International Broadcasting Awards on 6 November 2019 in London.
On April 9, 2019, Madowo was named among the 2019–2020 Knight-Bagehot Fellows at Columbia University. At the same time, he said that he was taking a sabbatical from the BBC for his fellowship at Columbia Journalism School. Madowo graduated from Columbia with a Master of Arts in Business and Economics Journalism on 20 May 2020.
Larry’s master’s thesis on African e-commerce pioneer Jumia’s tumultuous first year on the New York Stock Exchange won the Philip Greer Scholarship Award for Financial Writing. In 2020, Madowo made a return to BBC as a North American Correspondent with a report from a Coronavirus Unit in Houston, Texas.
Larry reported across the United States, primarily for BBC World News and the BBC World Service. He got reports from North Dakota, Georgia, Kentucky, New York, and Louisiana, as well as South and North Carolina.
