Leon Bibb Biography
Leon Bibb is an American journalist who is currently working as a news anchor and commentator for WKYC in Cleveland, Ohio since joining the station in 2018. Bibb was once a member of the BGSU Board of Trustees and was the first African American primetime news anchor in Ohio.
Leon Bibb Education
At the age of one, his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he grew up and graduated from Glenville High School. Bibb received his B.S. degree in journalism from Bowling Green State University in 1966. He then went on to study radio, TV and film as a graduate student. He also served in the Vietnam War and was awarded a Bronze Star.

Throughout his career, he has covered stories throughout Ohio regularly. He has also covered many national stories like the Persian Gulf War. In 2011, he interviewed President Barack Obama in a one-on-one conversation. The conversation took place in the White House. Furthermore, he interviewed President George H.W. Bush.
In the late 1960s, Bibb was a news reporter for The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, Ohio and was later hired at WTOL-TV in Toledo, Ohio in 1971 as a reporter. From 1972 to 1979, Leon worked as a news anchor and reporter for WCMH-TV in Columbus, Ohio from 1972 to 1979. At WCMH-TV, he became Ohio’s first African American primetime anchor.
Afterwards, he moved to WKYC-TV an NBC affiliate TV station in Cleveland and was promoted to primary news anchor for the Monday through Friday newscasts in 1986. In 1995, Bibb was hired as a news anchor and reporter for WEWS-TV5, the ABC affiliate Station in Cleveland. Moreover, Bibb has narrated and hosted many shows at the station including My Ohio with Leon Bibb, Leon Bibb’s Perspective, Kaleidoscope, and a series called Our Hometown. At WEWS-TV5, Leon worked for about 22 years.
Additionally, Bibb has interviewed numerous political leaders and notable figures, including President Barack Obama, President George H. W. Bush, Neil Armstrong, and James Earl Ray. Likewise, he also interviewed the convicted assassin of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and has written several short stories and poems, many of which have been published. Bibb retired from the anchor desk on August 1, 2017, but still returned to WKYC-TV on August 6, 2018, to be a commentator and special feature reporter.

Bibb has won six local Emmy Awards and received several citations from the Cleveland Press Club for excellence in journalism. He has also received the Distinguished Journalist Award from the Society for Professional Journalists. In addition to his list, Leon bagged the Awards of Excellence from Cleveland State University and the Radio-TV Council. He also received the Lower Great Lakes Emmy Awards -Gold Circle Award (50 years in television). Nevertheless, Bibb is also a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha and Sigma Pi Phi fraternities.
Further, Bibb has been inducted into the Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame, Glenville High School Hall of Fame, and Bowling Green State University School of Communications Hall of Fame. He also appeared in the Associated Press Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame, Sigma Delta Chi Hall of Fame, and the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Governor George Voinovich appointed Bibb to the Board of Trustees at Bowling Green State University, where he also served as chairman in 1996.
