Lisa Desjardins Biography

Lisa Desjardins is a renowned American political journalist currently working as a correspondent at PBS NewsHour. She joined the station in October 2014. Previously, she worked for the Associated Press and CNN Radio. In addition, she has reported on the Five United States presidential elections as of 2018.

Desjardins joined the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, between 1990-1994, receiving a bachelor’s degree in economics. Furthermore, she went to Russia for two years at Herzen University in Saint Petersburg, where she studied Russian studies and also learned to speak Russian. Additionally, at the beginning of 1996, she went to Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. She earned a Master of Science degree in journalism the following year.

Desjardins started her professional career at the local television station WBTW in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, between 1998 and 1999. Afterward, she worked as a freelance reporter for The Sun News, a Myrtle Beach Newspaper, as well as a freelance reporter for the news agency Reuters. After working for some months, in October 1999, she quit The Sun News and joined the Columbia NBC affiliate WIS as a political reporter. She also remained as a reporter for Reuters.

While at WIS, she covered the South Carolina Legislature, the 2000 Republican presidential primaries, and the debate on the display of the Confederate Flag at the South Carolina State House. Moreover, in 2003, Lisa became a reporter in the Washington, D.C. bureau of the Associated Press, she reported on the 2004 presidential election, Hurricanes, Medicaid, and the Iraq War.

Similarly, from 2005 to 2014, Desjardins moved to CNN where she worked for nine years. She was CNN Radio’s Congressional correspondent and occasionally reported for CNN.com and CNN’s news channel. Lisa reported on the 2010 Haiti earthquake for CNN Radio, her coverage was awarded a Sigma Delta Chi Award. CNN Radio came to closure in June 2013, and she was transferred to CNN’s Washington Bureau, where she served as a Capitol Hill reporter. She was among the team that covered the 2008 presidential primaries. CNN won a Peabody Award in 2008 for the team’s coverage.

Besides, while working at CNN, Lisa and Rick Emerson wrote a book on personal finance, called Zombie Economics: A Guide to Personal Finance. The book was published in May 2011 by Avery Publishing. She also chaired the June 2014 annual dinner of the Radio and Television Correspondents’ Association. Unfortunately, she left CNN in August 2014.

Additionally, Desjardins joined PBS NewsHour in October 2014 as a political reporter, in July 2015, she was promoted to Political Director, appearing on camera from the studio and from the U.S. Capitol. She is also a writer of articles for the NewsHour website.
