Martha Karua Biography
Martha Karua is a Kenyan politician who is currently an advocate of social justice. She is a former long-standing member of parliament for the Gichugu Constituency and an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. In addition, she was Minister of Justice. However, she resigned from this position in April 2009.
Karua is famous for consistently fighting for the protection of women’s rights and the improvement of the democratic process. Born in Kirinyaga District, Karua attended Mugumo primary school, Kabare Girls Boarding School, and St Michael’s boarding school Keruguya.
Later on, she attended Kiburia Girls Secondary School and Karoti Girls Secondary School where she passed her East African School Certificate at Karoti Girls High School. For her A levels, she attended Nairobi Girls’ secondary school. Karua then studied law at the University of Nairobi from 1977 to 1980. Furthermore, she was enrolled at the Kenya School of Law for the statutory postgraduate law course.
2013 to Present
Martha Karua contested the 2013 Kenyan Presidential election, under the NARC Kenya party ticket. New Kenyan law barred presidential contenders from simultaneously seeking a parliamentary seat, so she had to give up her interest in her somewhat safe Gichuga seat. Karua came out sixth with 43, 881 votes in a contested election outcome.
However, she would make a come-back in Kenya’s political scene in the 2017 general election seeking a Gubernatorial Seat in Kirinyaga County. She lost to Governor Anne Waiguru. Karua contested the election citing election irregularities and filed a petition at the High court of Appeal and ultimately at Supreme Court. She proceeded to file a petition in the East African Court of Justice. As a result, suing Kenya government for the failure of its Judicial arm to dispense justice in the petition.
In December 2015 she admitted to receiving a Ksh two million “donation” to her presidential campaign costs from British American Tobacco. She said that he thought that the contribution by Paul Hopkins, a BAT employee, was a personal donation. Most notably, the money was paid via Mary M’Mukindia who was running Karua’s campaign.
On September 20, 2021, Senior Counsel Martha Karua was unanimously elected as the Interim Mount Kenya Unity Forum Spokesperson by a section of leaders from Central Kenya.
