Mike Bettes Biography
Mike Bettes is a well-known Emmy award-winning American television meteorologist and storm chaser, currently working for The Weather Channel in Atlanta, Georgia. Bettes was a co-host of AHQ: America’s Morning Headquarters. Better currently hosts Weather Underground TV. Since 2003, Mike has been an on-camera meteorologist for TWC as well as an occasional fill-in weather anchor on The Today Show.
Bettes attended and graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Atmospheric Sciences.
Mike started his career in 2003 on The Weather Channel, including reporting on the Joplin, Missouri tornado in 2011, and the El Reno, Oklahoma tornado in 2013, whereby he has reported on every significant weather occurrence. In 2009 and 2010, he was part of the biggest tornado field trial in history, Vortex 2.
From 2006 to 2009, Mike hosted the show, Abrams & Bettes, Beyond the Forecast. Bettes hosted Your Weather Today from 2009 to 2012, until it was rebranded as Morning Rush, which he hosted until 2014. On March 17, the show was renamed America’s Morning Headquarters and reintroduced. In addition, he hosted Wake Up With AI from 2009 to 2014. Mike is also a field reporter for The Weather Channel and the main field meteorologist for The Great Tornado Hunt, an annual show that summarizes tornado seasons.

Furthermore, Mike accompanied scientists for TWC coverage of Vortex 2. Bettes has reported live from Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and other tropical cyclones as well as floods and winter storms. On May 31, 2013, just a year after his recovery from the EF3 tornado, he and his crew returned to the Great Plains to forecast and report severe weather as part of the 2014 Tornado Track.
Moreover, Bettes was one of several storm chasers struck by an EF3 tornado in El Reno, Oklahoma, which rolled and tossed his SUV approximately 200 yards into a field, collapsing the roof and inflicting major injuries to his crew. Furthermore, the same tornado also killed TWISTEX storm chasers, Tim Samaras, his son Paul, and colleague Carl Young. Dan Robinson of St. Louis, Missouri, escaped the tornado with minor injuries. He was ahead of the TWISTEX crew by a few hundred meters.
