Biography
Mike Wankum is an award-winning American broadcast meteorologist currently working as a weeknight weather reporter for WCVB’s Storm Team since 2006. He is mainly known for delivering the latest weather updates from around 04:00 p.m., 05:00 p.m., 07:00 p.m., and 11:00 p.m. Wankum also presents The 10 O’clock News in MeTV Boston as his additional work. Before Channel 5, Mike worked in other stations like WTVR news in Richmond where he was a chief meteorologist. He even worked his way up and became a chief meteorologist on KTIV News based in Iowa. So far, Mike has won sixteen regional Emmy Awards for his incredible Weather coverage over the years since early 1980.
Wankum is an Iowa native who traveled across the United States to accomplish his dream as a weather reporter and meteorologist. He grew up in a middle-class Native American family with both parents present throughout his life up to adulthood. Mike finished his high school education at a local public school situated in his hometown back in the early 1970s. He then graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology from Creighton University. He then decided to receive his Master in Atmospheric Science from Briar Cliff University.

Mike got his start as a meteorologist by working for KTIV News in Owa for ten years. He was teh cheif metrologist f or teh sttaion from 1982 to 1990. During this time with KTIV, Mike gained experience in covering live weather coverage on-air and analyzing weather data from different sources behind the scenes. In 1990, Mike left Iowa and traveled to Virginia to take up the position of on-air meteorologist at WTVR News based in Richmond Virginia. His work was greatly appreciated and he even won an Emmy for best weather coverage and technology reporting while he was at the station.
Wankum left WTVR News and joined WLVI News in Boston back in 1993. At WTCR, Wankum won eight Emmy awards and 3 AP awards for his incredible weather casting. Wankum joined WCVB News in 2006. Therefore, he has spent over 15 years working with WCVB. During his free time, Mike is a fan of motorcycles and often rides at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Mike and Clair then got married soon after their respective graduations. Their wedding was a small occasion that was only attended by close family and friends. The couple is now blessed with three wonderful children. The family resides in the western suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts.
