Pat Harvey Biography
Pat Harvey is a well-known American broadcast journalist who, since 1989, has worked as an anchor at KCAL 9 in Los Angeles. Harvey also began anchoring for KCAL’s sister station KCBS at 5 and 11 p.m. in 2010.
Harvey attended Cass Technical High School and the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Michigan. Pat is the longest-serving prime-time anchor at one Los Angeles television station. The city of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors declared October 30, 2009, Pat Harvey Day in honor of her 20th anniversary.
Harvey also won the Governor’s Award for the Los Angeles Area Emmys in June 2015. Pat was recognized in the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame in Washington, D.C.’s Newseum in 2012.
Harvey has traveled extensively for KCAL-TV 9 and its sister station, KCBS-T, in addition to her anchoring duties. She has reported on the Papal Conclave in Rome, South Africa’s first all-racial elections, El Salvador’s civil conflict, and the AIDS epidemic in East Africa and Russia.
Pat was the first journalist to interview discharged jury Jeanette Harris during the O.J. Simpson trial. The report aired on television stations across the country and was broadcast internationally.
Harvey has won 25 local Emmys, a national Emmy, and the L.A. Press Club’s Joseph M. Quinn Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. The Associated Press named her “Best News Anchor.”
Harvey was also honored by the Los Angeles branch of American Women in Radio and Television with the Genii award in 2008. The National Association of Black Journalists has also honored her.

Prior to moving to Los Angeles, Harvey worked at WGN Superstation in Chicago. Her investigations on poor pap smear tests, which resulted in thousands of women dying, led to legislation in Illinois regulating cytology labs and the closure of one in Southern California.
In addition, Pat was honored by the Society of Professional Journalists with the Peter Lisagor Award. She also broke a national scoop from the 1988 Democratic National Convention in Atlanta, disclosing a change in leadership in the Democratic National Committee, while working for WGN.
Harvey was also an original CNN Headline News anchor, starting the fledgling network in 1982 and then anchoring CNN’s morning news program until 1985, where he interviewed Ferdinand Marcos following the Philippines’ historic democratic elections.
Harvey is a native of Detroit, and her first reporting position was at WNEM-TV, an NBC station in Saginaw, Michigan. She was asked to carry the Olympic torch through downtown Los Angeles in 2002 due to her popularity and community work, and she received two honorary doctorate degrees in the humanities. Only two black evening anchors had previously worked in Los Angeles: Ken Jones in the early to mid-1970s and Felicia Jeter from 1980 to 1981.
Pat became a pioneer as a result of her outstanding work. Christine Devine, Marc Brown, and Michaela Pereira, among the leading weekday/night anchors in Los Angeles, owe their careers to her.
In addition, Harvey and four other television anchorwomen founded the Good News Foundation in 2006. In addition to an annual college grant for budding female journalists, the organization created a computer lab for homeless children on Skid Row, a park and entertainment facility in South LA, and a library for homeless women at the Downtown Women’s Center.
