Pato O’Ward Biography
Patricio “Pato” O’Ward Junco is a Mexican professional auto racing driver who is competing in the IndyCar Series, driving the No. 5 Chevrolet for Arrow McLaren. He is part of the youth who are coming to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, and bringing the next generation of superstars to one of the most exciting racing products in the world. Moreover, he has won many awards like the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, the Indy Lights championship, and most recently in 2021. In addition, he is a member of the McLaren Driver Development program.
Talking about his academic qualification, Pato completed his high school education in San Antonio, Texas. Afterward, he enrolled at a prestigious University where he completed his study. Soon after graduation, he began his professional career in karting. Later on, he completed open-wheel racing, in Latam Fórmula 2000, Formula Renault 1.6 NEC, and Pacific Formula F2000. In addition to that, he also competed in French F4 Championship as well as made his debut in the Pro Mazda Championship the following year.
In 2016, he appeared again and completed with Team Pelfrey in the Pro Mazda Championship, finishing the season as championship runner-up. Moreover, Pato also took part in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with Performance Tech Motorsports in the Prototype Challenge (PC) class. There he and his co-drivers won the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in the PC class, making him the youngest driver ever to win both races, at 17 years old.

Following that, he went on to win the 2017 Prototype Challenge drivers championship and the North American Endurance Cup. Prior to that, he was also signed with Andretti Autosport to compete in the Indy Lights championship. There he won nine races out of 17 races and was named Rookie of the Year and won the drivers championship at the penultimate race. After that, he got an opportunity to join the IndyCar Series where he made his debut at Sonoma Raceway in a second Harding Racing entry.
Apart from this, O’Ward also joined Carlin on a part-time deal that saw him drive in 13 races in the 2019 season. Besides this, he was also signed to a Red Bull deal where he finished in the 26th position and become the best race, achieving the Circuit of the Americas. After that, O’Ward returned to IndyCar by signing a deal with Arrow McLaren SP for the 2020 season. During his time with the Arrow McLaren SP (AMSP), Pato was paired with Oliver Askew for most of the races.
In his first years with their team, he had a strong start when he achieved his first podium finish in the second round of the Road America doubleheader, finishing second. In addition to that, he also won the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year award for his performance. He also received his second career pole position at the season opener at Barber but was unable to convert that pole position into a win. In 2022, O’Ward took part again in the 24 Hours of Daytona in the LMP2 entry with DragonSpeed, paired by Colton Herta and Eric Lux. Afterward, the team won after an overtake by Herta for first place in the final 11 minutes of the race. This year, he started fifth at the 2023 Indianapolis 500 and crashed out of the race fighting for the lead with Marcus Ericsson and Josef Newgarden.
In addition to his Arrow McLaren IndyCar Team commitments, the Mexican is a member of the McLaren Driver Development program. The aim is to support established professional drivers in other series, providing them with opportunities to gain experience in F1.
