Reeta Chakrabarti Biography
Reeta Chakrabarti is a British journalist, newsreader, and correspondent who is currently working for BBC News. Chakrabarti is well known for presenting BBC News at One, BBC News at Six, BBC News at Ten, and BBC Weekend News. In addition, she is famous for presenting regularly on the BBC News Channel. Furthermore, she has also reported extensively in the UK and abroad for BBC News.
Born in Ealing, London, Chakrabarti lived in India as a teenager where she attended the Calcutta International School in Kolkata and King Edward VI High School for Girls. She went on to study English and French at Exeter College, Oxford from 1984 to 1988.
After graduating, she became a reporter for the Breakfast Programme on the newly launched BBC Radio 5 Live in 1994. Later on, she became a general news correspondent working on television as well as radio. In 1997, she became the BBC Community Affairs correspondent. She covered the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry while in this position.

In 1999, she secured a role as a political correspondent for BBC, working across a range of programs on television and radio. She reported on politics for BBC One, and BBC Two, among other BBC affiliates. Most notably, she was the education correspondent for BBC News in January 2011. Later in May 2014, she was appointed as a news presenter on BBC One and the BBC News Channel.
Furthermore, in April 2018, she acted as host for the opening of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. As time progressed it was announced that Chakrabarti was to follow Dr. John Sentamu as Chancellor of York St John University in October of 2019.
Chakrabarti took up the post in March 2020 and in November 2021 she participated in an episode of the BBC Two program Celebrity Antiques Road Trip. In the same month, Chakrabarti appeared in a Children in Need special episode of Bargain Hunt on BBC1.
Throughout her career, Chakrabarti has received numerous awards and nominations. She was named an honorary fellow of Exeter College, Oxford in 2018. In addition, she was made an honorary Doctor of Letters by York St John University in 2018, and an honorary fellow of University College, London in 2019. Furthermore, she is also an honorary fellow of the University of East London.
