Robin Wright Biography

Robin Wright is an American actress and television director famous for her roles in films such as ‘The Princess Bride’ and ‘Forrest Gump,’ as well as on the Netflix series ‘House of Cards.’ She holds a Golden Globe Award and a Satellite Award and has received eleven Emmy Award nominations for her work in television films.

Born and raised in Texas, she started her career as a model before landing on the soap opera Santa Barbara. She then transitioned from television to film and gained fame for her roles in hit films such as The Princess Bride and Forest Gump.

Robin pursued a modeling career mainly for traveling opportunities involved in it. As a teenager, she was elected homecoming and had a successful modeling career. In fact, she is more interested in dancing than being photographed.

After high school, Robin was encouraged by her modeling agent to try acting and landed a lead part of the soap opera Santa Barbara. Though she lacked any kind of formal acting training and often shot her scenes the same day she got her scripts without rehearsals, Wright earned three Daytime Emmy nominations for her work in the show.

Her appearance in the show drew the attention of director Rob Reiner, who eventually decided to audition her for the lead role in his new film, an irrelevant 1987 take on Robin Hood-style swashbuckler films called The Princess Bride. The Princess Bride, an iconic film that resonated with children and adults propelled her to stardom. Her winning performances as Princess Buttercup suddenly transformed her into a bona fide film actor at the age of 21.

Despite The Princess Bride’s success, Wright was ambitious and did not want to be stereotyped as a hapless damsel in distress. She rejected down one-dimensional, passive female roles in blockbusters like Jurassic Park and Batman Forever in favor of a much darker role in the State of Grace, a gritty 1990 film about Irish gangsters, determined not to allow her blond hair or beautiful features to come in the way of more challenging roles.

She fell in love with her costar, Sean Penn, while filming the movie and gave birth to their first daughter, Dylan Frances, shortly after, followed by their son, Hopper Jack. Due to her pregnancy, she declined the part of Maid Marian in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, but returned for the Irish film The Playboys.

Wright starred alongside Gal Gadot and Chris Pine in Wonder Woman (2017) and its 2020 sequel as General Antiope. She co-stars opposite Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, and Jared Leto in the Blade Runner sequel Blade Runner 2049.

In April of 2019, it was revealed that she would direct her first feature film, Land. Wright would also play Edee Mathis, a lawyer who withdraws to the Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming in sadness. The film’s sales would begin the following month at Cannes. By October of that year, filming had begun, and the film had been picked up by distributor Focus Features.

Wright’s Claire Underwood, the wife of Spacey’s devious and unctuous politician Frank Underwood, is a power player in her own right and a force to be reckoned with.

In 2014, she took home the Golden Globe for the role.
