Roger Mudd Biography
Roger Mudd is a retired American News broadcast journalist who served as an anchor and correspondent for CBS News and NBC News. Most recently before his retirement, he worked as the primary anchor for The History Channel.
Before this recent role, Mudd was a substitute anchor for the CBS Evening News, the co-anchor of the weekday NBC Nightly News, and the host of the NBC-TV Meet the Press. He holds several awards including the Peabody Award. In addition, Roger received the Joan Shorenstein Award for Distinguished Washington Reporting and also the renowned Five Emmy Awards.
Roger received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington and Lee University in 1950, having such great classmates like author Tom Wolfe. He is a member of Delta Tau Delta international Congress
He began his journalism career in Richmond, Virginia as a reporter for the Richmond News Leader and radio station WRNL. At the News-Leader, Mudd served at the rewrite desk during spring 1953later becoming a summer replacement on June 15 the same year.
At his service in WRNL radio, Mudd did the daily noon newscast. He was later given his own daily broadcast, Virginia Headlines. In late 1954, he enrolled in the University of Richmond School of Law but soon dropped after one semester.
In the late ’50s, he relocated to Washington, D.C to serve as a reporter with WTOP News. This was a News division of the radio and television stations owned by Post-Newsweek.
While still in WTOP, Mudd got the attention of CBS News and moved to join the Washington bureau on May 31, 1961. He was the anchor of the Saturday edition of CBS Evening News, frequently substituting on the weeknight broadcasts when the Walter Cronkite was off duty.
