Sam Altman is an American entrepreneur, investor, programmer, and blogger who is currently the CEO of OpenAI and was previously the president of Y Combinator.
Altman grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, in the United States. He got his first computer when he was eight years old. Sam received his high school education at John Burroughs School and went on to Stanford University to study computer science until 2005 when he dropped out. He also received an honorary degree from the University of Waterloo in 2017.
Sam cofounded Loopt, a location-based social networking mobile application, in 2005 and rose to become its CEO. Loopt was shut down in 2012 after failing to gain traction after raising more than $30 million in venture funding, and it was purchased by the Green Dot Corporation for $43.4 million.
Sam joined Y Combinator as a part-time partner in 2011, and Paul Graham, the company’s creator, elected him president in February 2014. Loopt was included in his initial round of investments. He was also the CEO of Reddit for eight days in 2014, following the resignation of CEO Yoshan Wong. Sam is also the chairman of the boards of two nuclear enterprises, Helion and Oklo.
Altman assisted in the funding and creation of Project Covalence during the COVID-19 pandemic, which aimed to let academics quickly initiate clinical trials in collaboration with TrialSpark, a clinical trial company. In 2019, he hosted a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang at his San Francisco home. Sam donated $250,000 to American Bridge 21st Century, a Super PAC supporting Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, in May 2020.
