Shelley Smith Biography
Shelley Smith is an American journalist and sports correspondent who is currently working as a reporter for ESPN SportsCenter. She joined the station in 1997. Smith is also an author and has written two books. She is a proud graduate of the University of Nebraska, where she graduated in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science.
Prior to joining her current station, she worked for Sports Illustrated, in Stars and Stripes. In addition, she worked for The San Francisco Examiner, where she obtained a William Randolph Hearts Award for her series on Title IX in the Bay Area in 1986.
She covered the 1988 Olympics and has covered just about every sporting event in existence. This includes the Super Bowl and NBA Finals, among others. Currently, she is the ESPN NFL National Reporter for the Los Angeles Chargers.
She most recently won the Emmy in long-form feature reporting. This was for a piece she did on blind USC long snapper, Jake Olson. Shelley, was also a finalist, nominated in that category for a feature on Schuye LaRue. Schuye is a former basketball star now homeless and suffering from schizophrenia.
