Stephen Gan is a Philipines award-winning journalist who is currently working as editor-in-chief of V Magazine and VMAN. He is also the creative director of Ell US. Prior to his current occupation, he worked as creative director of US Harper’s Bazaar and co-founder of Visionaire. He has received a number of Awards throughout his career.
He was awarded the Creative Visionary Award by the CFDA in 2001 following his appointment at Harper’s Bazaar. Talking about his education, he pursued a degree in photography at Parsons New School of Design. He is a Philippines native but moved to New York in the early 80s.
He co-founded Visionaire in 1991 with model Cecilia Dean and Parsons alumni James Kaliardos. The Magazine provided free rein for artists. For this, it ended up becoming famous for showcasing innovative and groundbreaking images. Now a coveted fashion publication, Visionaire releases three issues a year with previous contributions from fashion heavyweights.
He launched V magazine in 1999. Gan launched it as a more accessible publication featuring pop-culture editorials and ready-to-wear designs. VMAN came in later in 2003. In 2014, he left Visionaire but continues to run V magazine and VMAN.
