Storm Field Biography

Elliott David Field (Storm Field) is a retired American television meteorologist best known for his work in the New York media market. He went into the industry after his father, Dr. Frank Field, a long-time New York weatherman.

Storm made his first excursion into weather casting while working for WABC’s Eyewitness News. He was hired by the station in March 1976, and his first appearance on television was when he was covering Hurricane Belle. He then worked when Tex Antoine was sick. Field was in charge of the weekend weather broadcasts as well as the weekday weather program at 11 p.m.

He took over as permanent forecaster on November 29, 1976, replacing the suspended Antoine, who had been fired five days earlier for making an inappropriate remark about a rape story.

Field was in charge of the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts, with various forecasters (such as Ira Joe Fisher and Sam Champion) appearing on the 5 p.m. newscast. He joined the morning team at WPLJ in New York in 1978, alongside Jimmy Fink and Shelli Sonstein.

Field, along with Tracy Egan and (later) Kaity Tong, became the host of the newly formed 5 PM Eyewitness News show in 1981, in addition to his meteorological duties. He would continue to do so until 1983 when Tom Snyder took over the newscast and subbed intermittently 1984. In 1991, he left WABC completely and was replaced on the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eyewitness News broadcasts by Sam Champion.

Field rejoined his father, Dr. Frank Field, at WCBS on August 24, 1992, after taking time off. This was the first time the two had worked together. In advance of his debut, WCBS filmed a series of commercials with Storm and Frank Field, employing puns on their names.

Field stayed with WCBS until 1997, succeeding Irv “Mr. G” Gikofsky as a chief meteorologist and then transferring to the station’s morning newscast toward the end of his tenure.

Storm’s third and final weather job took him to WWOR in 1997, where he worked as the station’s chief meteorologist and reported on the station’s 10 p.m. program. During his time at WWOR, he had a second chance to work with his father, when Dr. Frank Field was hired as a weekend weathercaster before retiring in the early 2000s.

Field was fired by WWOR in 2007 after ten years due to budget cuts at both WWOR and sister station WNYW and was replaced by Audrey Puente, a former WCBS weathercaster. He left the company soon after.
