Tim Pulliam Biography
Tim Pulliam is an Emmy-nominated, multiple award-winning American journalist currently serving as an anchor/reporter for ABC 11 WTVD News. You can catch him covering local and breaking news weeknights on ABC11’s television, digital, and mobile platforms.
Pulliam celebrates 15 years of award-winning television journalism, covering breaking news, race, culture, politics, crime, and tropical storms in the southeastern United States. In addition, he is no stranger to the Triangle.
Tim grew up in Person County, north of Raleigh-Durham. He is thrilled to return back home to his roots in North Carolina after working in Washington D.C. as a writer for several news publications and a media strategist for a nonprofit.
Moreover, Pulliam is an award winner of three Salute to Excellence in Journalism awards, presented by the National Association of Black Journalists (2020′, 2016′, and 2011′). Also in 2017, he won the ‘Reporter of The Year’ by the Associated Press and the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas.
Tim’s journalism career kicked off in 2006 in Wilmington, N.C., and later in Columbia, S.C. where he served as a reporter and anchor. While in Columbia, he was awarded a local Media Champion Award from the Richland One Community Coalition for his investigative coverage of simulated drugs and their effects on young people. Additionally, Tim was also president of the South Carolina Association of Black Journalists.

Similarly, Pulliam’s reporting experiences took him to Florida, where he broke various crime stories and covered prominent court cases, like the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial.
In 2015, Tim’s news reports on the Michael Dunn murder trial were featured in an award-winning HBO documentary called “3 1/2 Minutes: Ten Bullets.” The film explored the life and murder of defenseless Jacksonville teenager Jordan Davis. Jordan was only 17 years old and was Congresswoman Lucy McBath’s only child. Tim also features in the film which is also available on Netflix.
Furthermore, in 2016, Pulliam covered the remarkable opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. He interviewed the museum’s lead architect and Durham-native Phil Freelon, and both Oprah Winfrey and Stevie Wonder.
Tim graduated from Winston-Salem State University. The University named Pulliam among the top 40 alumni under the age of 40. Additionally, Pulliam received his master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University.
