Topper Shutt (born Charles Shutt) is a veteran American meteorologist currently serving as the Cheif Meteorologist at WUSA Channel 9 in Washington, D.C., and a weather forecatser for WHUR-FM. He joined WUSA9 News in 1998 from CNN in Atlanta, Georgia where he had started his career as a subsitute anchor and weather producer back in 1981.

Born and raised in the Washington area, Topper attended local primary and secondary schools. He then graduated from Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland before joining Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut where he majored in history. Later on, Shutt joined the University of Tennessee and the University of North Carolina at Asheville to pursue meteorology.

Shutt is the chief meteorologist for WUSA 9 and appears weekdays on the station’s 5 p.m, 7 pm & 11 pm newscasts as well as throughout the day and night during all major weather events affecting the region. He joined the station in 1998 from WUSA9’s sister station WFMY-TV in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he worked as a weekend weather anchor.

Prior to WFMY, Shutt worked as a weekday weather anchor for WTVK-TV in Knoxville, Tennessee between 1984 and 1987. This was after leaving CNN in Atlanta in 1984 where he started his broadcast career as a weather producer and substitute weather anchor.

He has provided weather forecasts for WHUR 96.3 FM since 1998, and he does the weather for ALL-News 99.1 WNEW. In 2018, Topper was voted the favorite local weathercaster by the readers of washingtonpost.com’s “Capital Weather Gang”.

He has earned the American Meteorological Society’s Seal of Approval for both television and radio in 1988. Between 1994 and 2000, Shutt filled in for Mark McEwen and Craig Allen on the CBS network’s “CBS This Morning” program.

In 1992, Topper co-founded Automated Weather Source, a company that places automated weather stations in elementary schools throughout the Metro Area. He often visits schools speaking about meteorology, rotary clubs, and even emcees at many charitable functions.
