William Fichtner is a renowned American actor who is famous for appearing in a number of films, television series, and video games. He is best known for his appearance as Alexander Mahone on Prison Break, Sheriff Tom Underlay on Invasion, and Adam Janikowski on Mom.
William was born in the United States of America, on Long Island. He grew up in Cheektowaga and graduated from Maryvale High School in 1974. Fichtner earned an associate degree in criminal justice from Farmingdale State College in 1976. Wiliam also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice at the College of Brockport, a State University of New York institution.
His education traces all the way to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. William credits Don Harvey with his decision to study acting. In addition, Harvey became his lifelong friend, taking Fichtner to his first Broadway show. Eventually, William received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Farmingdale State College on May 18, 2008.

In 1987, Fichtner made his acting debut as Josh Snyder in As the World Turns. Since then, he has appeared in Contact, Heat, Armageddon, Go, Equilibrium, Black Hawk Down, The Perfect Storm, The Longest Yard, Crash, Ultraviolet, Drive Angry, and The Dark Knight. He is famous for his supporting appearances, although one of his few leading roles is in Passion of Mind, which also stars Demi Moore and Stellan Skarsgard.
His performance in Crash earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture and a Broadcast Film Critics Choice Award for Best Acting Ensemble. From 2013 until 2021, he starred in the CBS sitcom Mom.
He played Ken Rosenberg in the video games Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas under the name Bill Fichtner. He also played Sheriff Tom Underlay in the sci-fi TV series Invasion from 2005 to 2006.
After Invasion was canceled, he starred in three seasons of Prison Break (2006–2009) as brutal FBI Agent Alexander Mahone. At the National Hockey League awards event in 2009, he co-presented the Vezina Trophy (for goaltending). Later, in The West Wing episode “The Supremes,” he guest-starred as judge Christopher Mulready. He also appeared in the feature film The Dark Knight as the manager of the Gotham National Bank and in the film Equilibrium as Jurgen.
Fichtner has a recurring role as TV producer Phil Yagoda on Entourage in June 2009. In the 2011 video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, he voiced Master Sergeant Sandman.
