Tony Geftos Biography
Tony Geftos is an American Emmy Award-winning journalist and former president of the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors who is currently working as 13ABC as a weekend anchor since 2000. He was most recently recognized by the Ohio Associated Press as “Best Reporter, Small Market,” placing 1st in the 2016 contest year, which was announced in May of 2017. Geftos heads up The Restaurant Report Card, seen every Thursday during the evening news.
Tony graduated from Riverview Community High School in Detroit, approximately 40 minutes drive north of Toledo. He also attended the University of Western Michigan where he was a four-year member of the Bronco Marching Band at 89.1 FM WIDR, Kalamazoo, as part of the radio evolution.
Tony started his on-air career at WTVG-TV in June 2000 and is currently working as 13ABC’s Senior Reporter and Co-Anchor of 13ABC Action News Weekend Mornings. Geftos is live on-air every Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 – 8:00 AM and again from 9:00 – 10:00 AM alongside McKenzie Kuehnlein. He also anchors Toledo’s only one-hour Noon Newscast on Thursday and Fridays and co-anchors 13ABC Action News Weekend Mornings.
Since joining the station n 2011, Tony and Christina have led the newscast to Emmy nominations five years in a row. Notably, they won “Best Weekend Newscast Market 41+” for the broadcast year 2016 in June of 2017. In addition, Geftos is an Adjunct Instructor at The University of Toledo, teaching TelevisionProduction, Writing for Media, and Public Presentations.

During his service in 13ABC, Tony is honored to have received an individual Lower Great Lakes Regional Emmy for “Best Breaking News 2014.” It was for his reporting when a smoldering house fire suddenly reignited during a live newscast and Tony knocked on doors of nearby homes to alert neighbors.
Prior to working in Toledo, Geftos was an interpretive ranger at the Silent City of Rocks National Reserve in Idaho, contributing to the Times-News in Twin Falls, Idaho. Subsequently, Tony transitioned to television as a reporter at KGWC-TV in Casper, WY, where he met his wife. His next broadcasting job was at KKFX-TV in Santa Barbara, California.
Geftos recently published two children’s books based on his own experience of enduring adult chickenpox on Valentine’s Day. “The Heart-Shaped Box” and “A Plague of Heart-Shaped Pox” as illustrated by local cartoonist Don Lee.
