Jacqueline Stewart Biography
Jacqueline Stewart is a University of Chicago professor of cinema studies and the host of Silent Sunday Nights on Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Silent Sunday Nights showcase silent films from all over the world, including both feature films and silent shorts, spanning from the work of director Oscar Micheaux to pioneer Mabel Normand, and actor Douglas Fairbanks to filmmaker Robert Flaherty.

Stewart grew up on Chicago’s South Side and graduated from Kenwood Academy High School. She got her Ph.D. in English from the University of Chicago and her BA in English from Stanford University. She was an Associate Professor at Northwestern University’s Department of Radio, Television, Film, and African American Studies (2007–2013).
Furthermore, numerous grants and fellowships have supported her study, including those from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies at Princeton University, the Kluge Center at the Library of Congress, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.
Jacqueline Stewart Career
Stewart became the Chief Artistic and Programming Officer of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in January 2021. She oversees the Academy Museum’s curatorial, educational, and public programming activities, including exhibitions, screenings, symposia, publications, workshops, and also K-12 programs, in this executive position.
She is also Director of the Arts + Public Life at the University of Chicago, where she is a professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies. Steward teaches film history in the United States, with a focus on African American cinema from the silent era to the present. Stewart was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2018.
She also became the first African-American host of Turner Classic Movies’ Silent Sunday Nights in September 2019. Stewart is a dedicated film archivist and preservation advocate. She studied moving image archiving at UCLA and the Cineteca Bologna’s FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives) Summer School film restoration program.
Moreover, she is a three-term member of the National Film Preservation Board (NFPB), which provides film preservation policy advice to the Librarian of Congress. Stewart is now publishing studies on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the National Film Registry and in the film archive profession as Chair of the NFPB Diversity Task Force. She has been on the boards of the Association of Moving Image Archivists and the Chicago Film Archives.

Stewart, a native of Chicago’s South Side, started the South Side Home Movie Project in 2005. Her goal was to preserve, digitize, and screen amateur footage showing daily life from the views of South Side residents.
In addition, Stewart is the award-winning author of Migrating to the Movies: Cinema and Black Urban Modernity, a study of African Americans and silent film. She is a coeditor of L.A. Rebellion: Creating a New Black Cinema, a classic study of the first group of black filmmakers to graduate from UCLA’s film school, including Charles Burnett, Julie Dash, and Haile Gerima.
Her work has been published in Critical Inquiry, Film Quarterly, Film History, and also The Moving Image. She is working on two books about directors, William Greaves and Spencer Williams. In 2021, Jacqueline was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.
