Clarissa Ward Biography
Clarissa Ward is a British-American journalist who is currently working as the chief international correspondent for CNN. Prior to her current role, Ward was a correspondent for CBS News, based in London. She also worked as a Moscow-based news correspondent for ABC News before joining CBS News.
Ward was raised in New York where she attended and graduated from the Godstowe and Wycombe Abbey boarding schools in England. She later graduated from Yale University in 2002. In addition, she holds an honorary doctor of letters degree from Middlebury College.
After graduating, she began her career as an overnight desk assistant at Fox News in 2003. From 2004 to 2005, she was an assignment editor for Fox News. Later on, she worked on the international desk coordinating coverage for stories such as the capture of Saddam Hussein.
In 2006, she worked as a field producer for Fox News. Ward produced coverage of the Israeli-Lebanese war, the Kidnapping of Gilad Shalit, and the 2005 Iraqi constitutional referendum, among others.

From October 2007, she was an ABC News correspondent based in Moscow. Ward reported from Russia for all ABC News broadcasts and platforms. On assignment in Russia, Ward covered the Russian Presidential elections.
On the other hand, her CBS career began as the network’s foreign news correspondent in October 2011. Ward was a contributor for 60 Minutes and served as a fill-in anchor on CBS This Morning beginning in January 2014.
On September 21, 2015, CNN announced that she was joining the network and reporting for all of CNN’s platforms. It was also announced that she would be based in London. Later in July 2018, CNN named her its chief international correspondent.
Ward became one of the first Western journalists to report on life in areas controlled by the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2019. In a joint investigation by The Insider in December 2020, she reported how Russian Federal Security Service members stalked Alexei Navalny for years.
In February 2022, CNN deployed her, initially, to the city of Kharkiv in order to cover the first moves of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. After the first days of the war, Ward was relocated to Kyiv, where she engaged in a series of wartime reports on the advance of Russian troops and the flight of Ukraine refugees away from Russian strikes.
Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards and nominations. She received a Peabody Award on May 21, 2012, in New York City. In October 2014, Washington State University announced that Ward would receive the 2015 Murrow Award.
