Dan Barber Biography
Dan Barber is a famous American chef. He is co-owner of Blue Hill in Manhattan and Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, New York. Also, Barber is the author of The Third Plate. He is a member of the advisory board of the Harvard Medical School Center for Health and the Global Environment. Prior, Dan has been awarded by The James Beard Foundation as one of the top chefs in America.
Barber was born and raised in New York City, New York, United States. He received his Bachelor’s degree in English and Political science from the University of Tufts. After that, he worked at Chez Panisse under Alice Waters. Thereafter, Dan returned to New York City to attend the French Culinary Institute. Soon after graduating, he worked with Michel Rostang in Paris before accepting a job at Bouley in New York. After that, Barber teamed up with his brother David and open up his own restaurant called Blue Hill Restaurant in Greenwich Village.
From then, Barber began to develop his signature approach to cooking, innovative new American cuisine with locally sourced and sustainable ingredients. Previously, he and Micheal Mazourek were involved in developing a miniature butternut squash. In 2002, Barber was named one of the Best New Chefs by Food & Wine. He also received several awards, including the 2006 award for Best Chef: New York City and the 2009 award for Outstanding Chef.

Furthermore, Dan was also titled one of the world’s most influential people in Time magazine’s annual Time 100. That same year, he received the award of the top chef in America from The James Beard Foundation. Apart from that, Barber is also a speaker, he gave a TED talk on foie gras produced on a farm in Spain which he describes as a “Garden of Eden”. Two years later, he appeared again in a TED talk conference, where he listed his discovery of extensively farmed fish at Veta La Palma. He also explains how ecological and sustainable farm systems affect the flavor of agricultural products.
Prior to that, Dan has also been appointed by former President Barack Obama to serve on the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition. He is a member of the advisory board of the Harvard Medical School Center for Health and the Global Environment. Besides that, he has also been featured in two episodes of the Chef Table series in 2015.
Dan has also published his own book titled The Third Plate: Field Notes On the Future of Food. In the book he describes the development of mankind via food in four episodes: “Soil”, “Land”, “Sea” and “Seeds”. Currently, he operates his own restaurant at Blue Hill in Manhattan and Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, New York.
