Clare Smyth is a famous Northern Irish chef. Smyth is the first and only British female chef to be awarded three Michelin stars for her restaurant Core in Notting Hill, London. Also, the second chef in history to hold three hats at the same time for her restaurant Oncore in Sydney, Australia. She is also notable for her work at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2018 wedding.

Smyth was born and raised in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. She started working while still in high school during the holiday period, Smyth used to work at a local restaurant where she got inspired and decided to become a chef. She dropped out of school at an age of 16 years and joined Highbury College in Portsmouth, Hampshire to study catering. During her time at college, Clare worked as a traineeship at Grayshott Hall, Surrey. Thereafter, she resigned and joined Terence Conran’s restaurant at Michelin House, London as a full-time caterer.

After that, Smyth went to Australia where she worked as a caterer before returning back to the UK. While in UK, Clare served in various restaurants like The Waterside Inn, Gidleigh Park, and St Enodoc Hotel in Rock. At St Enodoc Hotel Clare worked as the head chef and won the title of Young Cornish Fish Chef of the Year. In 2002, she was hired at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay where she become the new head chef of Restaurant. Also, Smyth become the first female chef in the United Kingdom to run a restaurant with three Michelin stars.

Moreover, Clare also served at Alain Ducasse’s Le Louis XV restaurant in Monaco before running the Chelsea-based restaurant. In 2013, she was named the Good Food Guide’s ‘National Chef of the Year’ as well as appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). On top of that, Smyth also received the Chef Award at the 2016 Catey Awards. Early, she was awarded a perfect ten score by the Good Food Guide of the UK. Smyth set up her own restaurant titled Core in Notting Hill, London in July 2017. A few months later, the restaurant won the title of Best Restaurant at the GQ Food and Drink Awards.

Apart from that, she was named the World’s Best Female Chef 2018 by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. That year, Clare was featured as one of the judges in the “UK” episode of The Final Table. Most recently, she opened up her second restaurant called Oncore in Sydney, Australia. Her first restaurant was awarded three Michelin stars in the 2021 Michelin Guide, which made her the first British woman to have a restaurant awarded three Michelin stars. Besides that, she has also appeared on television shows such as Masterchef and Saturday Kitchen.
