Alex Atala Biography
Alex Atala is a famous Brazilian chef who runs the restaurant D.O.M. in São Paulo Paulo. He is also the most famous culinary chef in South America and a champion of Brazilian produce and flavor. His restaurant was listed in 2012 as one of the 4th best restaurants in the world by the S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
Atala was born and raised in Brazil. He attended Ecole Hotelière de la Province de Namur for his culinary training in Belgium. After that, he went to France where he worked under the leadership of Jean Pierre Bruneau and Bernard Loiseau. After working for a while, Alex returned back to Sao Paulo, where he opened his own restaurant D.O.M. In 1999. In 2015, when the Michelin Guide Brazil debuted D.O.M. was the country’s first and only recipient of two Michelin stars.
Furthermore, Atala also hosts a television show on the Brazilian television channel GNT. Moreover, in 2012, D.O.M. has rated the 4th best restaurant in the world by the S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants, published by Restaurant magazine. His restaurant also holds the title of “Acqua Panna Best Restaurant In South America.” In the following year, Atala set up another institute titled Ata which is related to food, together with Roberto Smeraldi and Carlos Alberto Ricardo, among others.

Atala is also known for transforming traditional Brazilian dishes and adapting French and Italian culinary techniques to native Brazilian ingredients. Prior to that, he launched two other restaurants in the city of Sao Paulo, Dalva e Dita and Açougue Central as well as all-day eatery Bio, which endeavors to use every part of each ingredient. Atala was also accused of misappropriating the name “Cerrado vanilla” by registering it as a commercial name at the Brazilian Institute for Industrial Property (INPI). Recently, he was accused of sexual harassment by a former employee.
